Health & Wellness

It is important for children to come to school emotionally and physically healthy. Studies have shown that children’s physical well-being has a significant effect on their learning and long-term success. When children are well-rested, well-nourished, and physically fit they are more ready to learn.

Every parent wants his or her child to be happy and healthy. Parents share the responsibility of ensuring their child's well-being with teachers, the community, its members, and all its services. Learning the facts about various health concerns is key to this common effort.

National PTA is committed to building healthy families and healthy communities, and believes we all have an important role to play in making sure parents, schools, and communities have the support and resources they need.

Healthy Homes

Studies have shown that children's physical well-being has a significant effect on their learning and long-term success. When children are well-nourished and physically fit, they are more ready to learn.

Supporting good nutrition and physical activity at school is only part of the picture—the best place to teach healthy habits is at home! Parents can set a great example for the whole family by stocking their pantries with healthy foods, creating healthy new family traditions, and getting active alongside their children.

What parents can do to create a healthier home:

Healthy Schools

Healthy schools help reduce the epidemic of childhood obesity and promote student learning.

In a healthy school …

  • All foods and beverages sold or served meet students' health and nutrition needs.
  • All students have opportunities to be physically active on a regular basis.
  • Nutrition and physical education foster lifelong healthy habits.
  • Districtwide wellness policies are developed, implemented, and evaluated with input from students, parents, staff and interested community members.

PTAs play an important role in creating healthy schools. Your PTA can help prevent childhood obesity by advocating for healthy school breakfast and lunch options, safe places to be physically active, and quality physical education programs.
